Fireproof insulation

My E29 has a ~1 inch thick panel of what I assume to be fireproof insulation attached to the inside of the engine compartment cover. Its breaking down and I'd like to replace it. I've read about Soundown on this site but it looks like its is hard to work with. Any suggestions ???

Is the original asbestos? I had to cut a small section of the insulation out to clear the alternator. I didn’t feel very comfortable cutting this stuff.

Fire Proofing or Sound Insulation?

The flakey press board in old Ericson engine compartments was an attempt
at Sound Insulation....not Fire Proofing
You most likely need to replace your old insulation with Sound Insulation.
The only thing that needs FireProofing in your engine compartment is the
exhaust riser. Fiberglass Cloth is used for Fire Proofing on the exhaust riser.
You can get Sound Insulation in Sheets at WM or your local Commercial
Fishermans Supply. Don't bother with the sticky back Sound Insulation.
The glue fails over time. Attach the Insulation with SS Fender Washers and
Round Head Screws :nerd:
