Those are not whales, they're dolphins! Not uncommon out here.

We saw both. At some point someone said "there's too many whales, they must be up to something". At that point in time, we had 5 of them (humpbacks the size of the boat) within a hundred yards, including two not more than a hull length away.
I've also seen one jumping completely out of the water at a couple hundred yards distance, another diving under the boat, and a pod of killer whales pressing a school of fish to the surface. All within a couple of weeks.
