vibration

Last time I came out I put three of those bulky zincs on the shaft (I know, overkill), replaced the cutlass bearing and installed new a R&D Flexible Coupling and a PSS Shaft Seal. The vibration was really bad. The dripless bearing (PSS)was shaking so much that it was a shower down there. However, the R&D Flexible Coupling meant that not very much of the vibrating was transfered to the rest of the boat. Well, after about ten hours of motoring I hauled out for a bottom peel and what I found was that (1) the cutlass bearing needed replacing again, (2) the two bulky shaft zincs nearest the motor were so loose they would soon be departing, and (3) the Flexible Coupling, when put on a lathe, was 0.005 inches Total Indicated Reading out of concentricity between the fore and aft spigots. (The machinist said that he had seen them much worse.) Well, now I am headed for one small shaft zinc, no Flexible Coupling and a properly aligned shaft and motor.
