Smoke alarm conversion into bilge alarm ?

I had a sailor friend suggest using a modified smoke alarm as a bilge alarm.

I did a search and found that others have suggested the same thing. While it might not work in fresh water it would seem like it would work in salt water. Has anyone here tried it to see if it actually is a practical solution ?

sure but why not just make a simple circuit without the smoke alarm

Should work fine.

Radio Shack a while back had a little kit to learn to solder that had the parts and a little board. I can't find it on their site any more.

I also considered ripping the 9-volt connector and the buzzer out of a smoke alarm to see if just using those part would work, of course, then you no longer have the smoke alarm functionality.

Today I soldered a $19 smoke alarm so that we could try it. Amazing, it works
