Impeller bilge pump ?

Our manually activated bilge pump is a Jabsco impeller pump.

I'm trying to figure out the logic behind using a burn-out-prone impeller pump for life saving. I think the typical Rule bilge pumps are centrifugal rather than impeller ?

What about bellows pumps ?

I was just looking at Jabsco bilge pumps yesterday. My impression was the diaphragm pumps were the better choice. Not inexpensive though; I think the one I was looking at was north of $200 bucks. Others were in the $500 range. Dry running ability and the lift distance it can handle were pluses for the diaphragm pumps.

Ericson installed two Jabsco pumps in our '88 boat. I have replaced one, over the decades (rather than chosing to rebuild it). They can not back-syphon and can run dry.
Good quality, altho not as cheap as the Rule... whose design I consider to be cheap - for a reason.

ITT Jabsco 372020000 or the newer 37202 model with enclosed drive.

ps: I would never choose any pump for this purpose that could burn out an "impeller". Yikes.
