I recently purchased a 1978 E/34-T. I have a thousand questions about it, but first and foremost is this: Where is the hull number??? I've looked everywhere. :confused:

Look on the transom at the top edge of the rail...usually the HIN is found there, but there seems to be some questions as to how many different places the number was placed..:esad:

Along this same line I have just become the proud new owner of a 39, hull # 28, built in 1971...I think..LOL. I know about the Nov 72 start of HIN reqirements, but my question is what about boats like mine built before this...did they not create HINs, or something to denote recordkeeping....I'm in the throws of trying to get insurance...:confused:

Thanks for all the help, and I hope that I was some use to you Mark..

No luck, but more questions.

Thanks, Walt. I don't see anything there.

Looking at my title, the Hull ID No. is ERY34127M78I

Am I correct in deciphering it?

ERY = Ericson Yachts
34 = Length
127 = Hull Number
M = ???
78 = Year
I = ??? (Since mine has a trunk cabin and is clearly a 34-T, I would have expected a roman numeral two to signify that, not a one.)

Also, mine came with a tiller instead of a wheel. Does anybody know how many of those were made?

I think the M and the I refer to the month it was built, but I can't remember; I think the I is the month, counting from either Jan = A, etc. or Aug. = A, etc. They changed the labelling along the way, and since then nobody can figure out when their boats were built. :D
But they sail just as well, regardless of which month they were built! :egrin:

Others may have better information on this. Also, if you do a search on HIN numbers on various websites, you will find more information on when the change was made, and what it was before and after.

Frank.

Decoding HIN

Mark,
Here is information on the HIN (copied from survey done for my boat):

October 31, 1972. The number consists of a combination of 12 letters and numbers identifying the manufacture,
the model number, hull number, date of construction and model year.

Hull numbers used between October 31, 1972 and August 1, 1984 are as follows:
1 2 3 = Manufacture's Code
4 5 = Model Number
6 7 8 = Hull Number
9 10 11 12 = Date of Manufacture ( 9 10 Month, 11 12 Year)
Or
9 = M
10 11 = Model Year
12 = Month of Manufacture; A = August B = September
Example: TSP90014M83B
TSP = Tillotson/Pearson
90 = Model 90
014 = Hull #14
M83B = Model Year, Construction began 1982, Code B = September
Hull Numbers used after August 1, 1984 are as follows:
1 2 3 = Manufacture's Code
4 5 6 7 8 = Manufacture's Hull Number
9 10 = Date of Certification or Manufacture (9 is Letter for Month; A =
January, 10 is Last Digit of Year)
11 12 = Model Year
Example: PYZ40012L586
PYZ = Present Yachts, Inc.
40012 = Hull Serial Number
L5 = December 1985 Date of Certification or Manufacture
86 = 1986 Model Year

Thanks, guys!

So it was manufactured in April, 1978, and is hull number 127.

Now if only I could match the numbers on my title to some numbers on my hull. I suspect the numbers are buried under gelcoat.
