Another factor to consider when trying to match finishes, is photochemical oxidation in the wood. Mahogany darkens over time when exposed to sunlight. When making up sample boards,
I would experiment with leaving the wood out in the sun (or a uv light source) before applying anything. This can be helpful if your new wood color is close, but the overall tone is lighter
than the old stuff.
