Hove to Speed and Direction [and Reef Considerations]

Christian’s mast cam cleat has been a game changer since I installed it. All that’s needed to keep the ring on the horn is tension the halyard a bit after fitting it on. Then back to the cockpit to tighten it on the winch. One of the most useful simple changes I’ve made on the boat. I‘d guess...

    HELP!- Wiring Issues

A former shipmate (and electrical engineer) still insisted on soldering everything and adding two heat shrinks, one about 1/4” longer than the other. I’ve heard soldering actually makes a hard spot that can cause premature failure, so I use that as an excuse not to solder as long as I can avoid it

Victron Lynx Distributors - are they worth it?

Has anyone used Victron Lynx Distributors? I’m laying out new charge and load busses for our new batteries/alternator/solar and they were recommended to me. They seem as if they could take up less space than building my own fused positive bus bars, but that the way that they integrate the...

    HELP!- Wiring Issues

Ancor makes double crimpers for non heat shrink terminals and single crimpers for heat shrink ones. I think the idea is that the second crimp on the non heat shrink ones crimps the longer insulated housing to the wire insulation. This isn’t necessary in a heat shrink terminal since the heat...

Hove to Speed and Direction [and Reef Considerations]

I’ve always thought this page that looks ”added” to the owners manual was helpful. I don’t have a cunningham but still feel like I can get plenty of luff tension. The angle between the reef cringle and the end of the boom and maintaining good outhaul tension is what’s key. This is going to...

    40 years of monohull "evolution"

Those boats are plenty fun, as are my friends’ 29’ers or lasers. I’d suggest they still have more in common with 80’s boat design than they do with today’s AC boats, especially in that they don’t require megawatts of power to make them sail. And as many have said above, any boat that’s...

    40 years of monohull "evolution"

Here’s a sad commentary on the evolution of the America‘s Cup boats https://sailinganarchy.com/2024/04/28/you-call-that-sailing/

I need some help identifying this on my 1987 38-200

I’d taste it to eliminate the possibility it’s a raw water leak from the engine. If it’s fresh I’d start looking for leaks in the cockpit area. On our 38-200 everything aft of the companionway drains into the space aft of the engine and is pretty easy to see under the shaft by the seal. Do you...

    Naples Florida Gondola with Bepi.

Thanks for sharing your video Bepi, it looks like a beautiful spot! Nice to know they’re not chasing boats out of the anchorage there, I’ve heard it’s a pretty fancy part of the world.

Water pump chatters at end of each cycle

Thanks Frank I’ll give it a shot!

Hove to Speed and Direction [and Reef Considerations]

Our 38 will crab along making 1kt or so and leaves a halfway decent slick. Like Christian suggested, I’ve found easing the main is key. It’s a balancing act between backed jib and rudder. Much main at all and we start moving ahead.

Water pump chatters at end of each cycle

I have a Shurflo Aqua King II pump and a Shurflo accumulator. My pump is chattering at the end of each cycle. No cycling on and off unless I turn the tap. No visible leaks. I first noticed it when one of my tanks ran low, and switching to the other tank seemed to fix it. Now it’s back, on both...

Sailing (especially singlehanded) in significant waves

That’s a great video! Cool to see how different boats respond to different sets of waves. Pretty scary that some of the commercial fishing boats had a tough time - I imagine those guys know their way in and out very well.

Sailing (especially singlehanded) in significant waves

Ray, I wondered about your use of “hull speed” and it sounds like there’s some discussion above about how much sail to carry to drive the boat. Do you mean you carry enough sail to get your boat up to theoretical hull speed? Or were you just talking about boat speed through the water more...

Adding cam cleat to cabin top

Doh, double post. Thanks for the epoxy in the voids of the store-bought base idea Ken, I hadn’t thought of that
