voltage regulator

I have a westerbeke 4-107 diesel engine and a 55 amp alternator. In the engine manual it says the voltage regulator should be mounted on a 50 square inch metal plate. Any reason why this is? Im putting this boat back together and everything was in a box

Only a guess, but maybe for heat transfer.

Heat dissipation. You might be able to obtain a solid-state replacement that runs cooler or which has a built-in
heat sink that sends the heat out through fins on the front.

Put a Balmar regulator on and be done with it.
