Velux 5 Oceans disaster

Anyone following this race? Now Alex Thomson has lost his keel 1000 miles S of Cape Town and Golding is going to rescue him. Stamm is all alone in front and even assuming, hopefully, that Thomson is safely rescued, the leg to Freemantle is now a complete shambles. The problem with this race seems to be that the French didn't show up and they provide 1/2 of the world's s/h racers.

Thanks for the posting, Roger. I'd heard another around alone was going on but hadn't found the website. For anyone else who is interested the website is http://www.velux5oceans.com

The rescue ought to be underway by now.

other 5 oceans website

Actually, the official 5 oceans website has been pretty lousy, although it is steadily getting better. Mike Golding's website - http://www.mikegolding.com/ - is generally superior, and has a simple Google based tracker, which the Velux folks apparently are unable to master.

Rescue accomplished (good news). One state of the art Open 60 abandoned to the southern ocean (bad news)

Golding's mast broke after rescue but will try to rig something together. They need to go about 1000 miles to get help.

Golding

This race is definitely turning into a "tortoise and hare" story, excepting Stamm, who appears to be both.
