Universal M12 starting issues

I have a 1987 Ericsson 26 with a Universal M12 engine. Although I replaced the ignition switch in the last year, I frequently encounter instances in which the starter will not respond. 4--5 attempts are often required before the starter engages. I'm asking that anyone who's experienced this let me know what's worked. Has removing and cleaning the solenoid and that starter worked? Is it a matter of replacing either or both of these parts?

Thanks for any help.

In my experience the cause has been

1. The button or switch itself.

2. Loose or corroded ground connection (s) , result of vibration, rust, age.

3. Solenoid.

4. Sometimes a worn bendix on the starter can stick, although this doesn't sound like that. If starter seems to stick, whack it with a hammer and see what happens.

Wiring Modification

Have you performed the wiring modification? Have you disconnected the "trailer" style connectors and cleaned them? Are your batteries fully charged? Have you jumped the solenoid at the starter to see how it responds?
