Sail slugs

Recently, my wife and I (new sailors) were out in wind beyond our skill level. I have an Ericson 27, which I bought used. It was not maintained very well in the last years befor I bought it. In fact the sail were left on it during a Michigan winter. Anyway, while out a week ago the plastic sail slugs all snapped. I've started to replace them all and noticed the the slug thats attached to the head of the sail is made of nylon and stainless steel. It is also sewn in rather than the plastic shackles used on the other slugs. Is there a reason the top slug is different than the rest? Can I sow in a plastic one instead?

replacing sail slugs

This happened to me as well on my old E27. I was out single-handing under main alone in 25+ knots and attempted a gybe. I learned a lot that day, including how to get the main down when it is only held up by the halyard. :0

I took my main to a local sailmaker, who noted this on his invoice:

"Remove old luff slides. Install A118 slides along luff."

He supplied 11 of these, all identical from what I saw.

Here's a link to what he used (see pg. 73 - Sailman 3000, Item A118) :

Also, all of them were sewn in using tube webbing, which is likely the reason they didn't snap off when the same thing happened later in the season. :0
