Replacing transducer

I am about to barrier coat and also replace a transducer, should I barrier coat before I install the transducer or after (barrier coat right over the transducer) Also what is the proper bedding for the transducer, 5200?

5200 is not recommended unless you want to remove a big chunk of hull when you eventually try to remove the transducer. 4200 or Sikaflex 291 would probably be better.

Putting the barrier coat over the depth transducer will likely cause the transducer to not work. In fact, you should not really be using normal bottom paint over it either. There is special transducer paint, which is water based so that it will not attack the transducer like solvent-based paints can.

5200? No way! Even 4200 is too adhesive in my opinion. You don't need adhesive, just sealant. I use Boatlife for my transducers. You WILL want to replace it one day.Regarding paint: My local boat yard recommends NO paint on transducers, and they chewed me out last year for using the water soluble transducer paint. Evidently, they've seen a lot of failures caused the paints recommended by transducer manufacturers, so they recommend none at all. They also recommend a conversation with your bottom diver to keep the scotchbrite pads away, and simply clean the transducer with a soft cloth.By the way, I have not experienced problems despite using transducer paint.
