Removing foam-backed vinyl lining

I started removing the foam-backed vinyl lining in the compartments of my '73 E27. The stuff was sagging and in pretty rough shape..unuseable. The vinyl ripped out easily but the remaining foam that was originally attached to it (3/16 thick) is still mostly glued to the hull and I went at it with a putty knife-very slow business. Any ideas as to an easier way of removing this stuff? Perhaps a solvent (I'd hate to turn it into a gooey mess however)?
My plan is to either clean and paint these compartments; or, cut and glue polypropylene (cloth) in the place of the old vinyl; or, follow your suggestions as to an easier way to deal with this..
Thanks,
