Reconditioning gauges

Hi folks - is it economically feasible to have gauge reconditioned? Is there a specialist that does this that y'all like to use? Better to buy new or time to hit Craigslist?

Please excuse how dirty that panel is, picture was precleaning :-0

SR Mariner got out of the sailing instrument business in December 2006.

Their announcement does mention "service and parts" being supported, but that was several years ago. You should certainly contact them.

My guess is that you will probably end up replacing them with modern (networked!) instruments like I did when my original Datamarine stuff got tired out.

Parts seem to be readily available for these old instruments, it'll just be a matter of how much you want to spend on old instruments.
I bought a new masthead unit and a digital display board for mine last summer.

Here's the contact info:

I replaced Autohelm instruments...... I installed an entire "network" IS20 system from Simrad 2 years ago and it NEVER worked correctly. I was Beta testing their junk for them. Ripped it all out and put in a Raymarine ST60+ system. Thats when I realized that the Autohelm wiring is the same as the ST60+. Nothing like re-wiring the boat TWICE. Just last week the ST60+ wind instrument quit working entirely. Its the control head, out for warranty repair, luckily within the 2 year mark.

The moral of the story? If I could go back to the bulkhead mounted Datamarine's or new Moor's, etc. I would. I don't understand the current trend to over-complicate these relatively simple devices. I fell into the "upgrade" trap. KISS on the instruments unless you are a competitive racer.

Actually, that's what I plan on. Scroll to the bottom of this page for classic round instruments with some newer features:

and I inquired not long back if they had any trade-in for old DMI instruments. They don't have a formal program, but I got a postive response that they would work out a discount. I'd ask on any flavor of instrument at this point. I've had good support from them on keeping my old DMI instruments alive, but at some point, an upgrade will be in the cards. As part of my inquiry, I confirmed that the older transducers/sending units often provide some level of functionality with the newer head units.

Previous instrument replacement thread, with a link within it to another thread.
Given the ages of our boats, this will surface again... and again...

One note about newer instruments -- the ability to link them together on a small-wire buss is nice to give you True Wind and Speed, but just having the large easily-viewed digital readouts is the part I appreciate the most!

ps: David, thanks much for the DMI link! I did not realize that they had an all-new line of instruments out. :)
