Prop shaft

Prop shaftWhen I pull my engine I want to examine my prop shaft. How can I tell if it is straight( not bent). I'm worried that a bent shaft is wearing the rear oil seal and causing a leak

In order to know for absolute certain you will have to take the shaft to a good machine shop. But to get a general idea, just lay it on a flat surface and give it a roll. If it rolls flat it's probably not bent. If it wobbles, then on to the next step.

A pane of glass works well as a "flat surface" but you are trying to measure a couple of thousandths over about 5 feet. A machine shop will put it in a lathe and turn it against a dial indicator. Also straight is not the only question, there is also the issue of proper diameter and wear at the seals and bushing areas. Had a new one made about 5 years ago for about 600 dollars. After seeing the time and precision that goes into one, it was cheep! Edd
