On the water transmissions replacement

Shaft Coupler

To add confusion. I am looking at changing my coupling this fall and learned a couple things:
1. There is two types of couplings - Solid and Split. The Split types are easier to R&R. I "think" that will be my choice when the time arrives. The original type is solid and has been in place for 22 some years in my boat.
2. One marine propeller company (Tacoma Propeller in Tacoma, WA) sells both (Split = 4" Borg Warner Split Coupling, pilot bored, no keyway, $83). And told me they will only sell if they machine the coupling with the boats own shaft so that the run out and fit is precise. That is about an hour labor if the shaft is delivered to them.
3. Another company (Gold Star Marine in Port Townsend, WA) told me they can have the same coupling machined, per dimensions of the shaft, so that it is delivered ready to install. Go figure.
Gold Star also said don't even bother trying to remove the old coupling by normal means. Just get a cutter and cut it in half in place. Less time and money.
Let us know how this all works out. I will be watching closely.
