Not to steal Eric's thunder....

Not to steal Eric's thunder, but my fiance Jenny and I (Justin) are in nearly the same position.

We have our offer accepted on an E35 MKII. It is our first sailboat, though we are living aboard a 33 foot powerboat now. We will be trying to sell our powerboat (anybody want one? cheap! hehe) over the summer while keeping our Ericson on a mooring and trying to finish the work that it needs (mostly lots of interior cosmetic stuff).

We are buying the survey from a previous potential buyer who backed out, but we've already seen a list of the bad points of the survey since we are friends with the seller. So we know the survey has no major glitches.

Pretty much, the deal is as good as done. We are just very excited to be moving to sail power. We are kinda the green/eco-friendly types and this just sits so much better on our conscious'.

Anyhow, we have much to learn and look forward to learning lots of it from this forum. Thanks in advance to all of you.

Justin,

welcome to the site! There are a lot of us 35 MkII owners here and we're happy to help out any new owners of the marque. Good luck with your offer!

Eric and Justin,

You are both killing me! I am in the hunt for an E32-35 myself, have looked at First Lady online myself, but won't be ready to commit until next winter when our new house is finished. Good luck, and Eric I'll see you on the ChesBay. I am in Port Republic, Western Shore north of Solomons. I am deeply envious of your coming sailing season!

best,
Freeman

our boat to be....

From the outside it is beautiful, but I'll spare you the pics of the inside... needs some work there :) Hopefully by the end of summer I can get the inside to match the outside a bit better.

Steal my thunder will you! :egrin:

No, congrats and I hope goes well. I love the yellow and black, a striking combination and shows off the sheer line very well. Send some pics of the inside, I want to compare disrepair.

I went to see the First Lady yesterday. The broker was kind enough to let me rummage around by myself for two hours. The boat was dirty and needs a good wax/polish/or compound on the outside along with extensive teak work, nothing broken, just old and dull and needs to be taken care of.

But the survey is next Wednesday and after that I'll have to plan for the long sail (motor) home.

The boat looked great, needs a bit of cosmetic work, but nothing more, I hope.
Here is a picture, I hope, that I took yesterday.

Under the carpet is teak and holly. I don't know why he covered it up, is there something I don't know about that floor? I figured on keeping the carpet in until most of my interior repairs/refinishing is complete and then taking it out, lightening the teak and holly and getting a small non skid rug or something. Maybe there is something I don't know... Boethius, what is the sole in your boat?

Eric, Ah yes, I've seen that one online. It is beautiful. Strange what people do to the flooring though. Mine is just the old fiberglass sole. It is very scuffed and dirty. But, like yourself, I think i'll fix the rest of the inside first and then worry about the floor later.

Mine looks much worse inside. Far more "project" to my boat. It needs a headliner and all the wood needs to be refinished. All the cushions have been custom made last year though so that is a nice bonus.

Now that the listing says "sold" i'm not as afraid to post the link haha..

good luck with your trip home.

Hey, there is a lot of built in value on that boat! The ports look nice, the teak exterior is good, you have easier access to cabin top hardware thanks to no headliner, and the galley is far better equipped than mine. I have a campstove and an ice box....

All in all, I'd say you are getting a great deal on that.

Eric,
The sole is plywood most likely. they sell a teak and holly sheet product I believe. be careful if you decide to sand it down, I suspect there isn't much of the top laminate layer to sand. On the upside its not hard to replace if you need to. If there is sand under the carpet, obviously clean it up and then put the carpet back down to reduce damage to the sole during your repairs. Will you use Cetol or varnish on the brightwork?

Most likely varnish. I know the headaches it can cause with upkeep, but I can't deny the way it looks. I want to have the interior as seamlessly connected with wood as possible, but I want to vary gloss/semi/matte for different areas of the boat. Not too busy, but enough of a contrast that it is noticeable. And I have no idea what to do with the galley top. I hate the laminate and it is not in great shape, either. I was thinking of Corian. It's lightweight, relatively impervious, and a dark corian would look nice, but it is pretty expensive as well. I might do something with tile, or stone, or shale but something will be done.

Yeah, I bet the sole is plywood. Sanding would have to be done extremely carefully and really just a good clean, light sand, varnish might do the trick. If not, I will replace with lighter wood (holly and Cherry) in the future. The cabin is a bit dark so the lighter wood will help brighten it a bit.

good advice about leaving the carpet on the floor. I figured I would use the carpet and the current cushions to help protect the boat while I do repairs and then pull them out after. I think a good cleaning of the floor first, then put the carpet back in (maybe clean the bottom of the carpet as well to help protect what little of the sole is left).

Eric,
You might want to do some searching on this site with a word like Sole.
The most significant thread has 5539 hits, as of this morning...
:nerd:

There is quite a bit of info here on re-finishing, also.

I favor varnish, but we keep some rubber back area rugs on it for better footing on wet days.

Yellow hull

I like the Ericson yellow hulls. My E27 has the same color scheme. It is rare and easier to find your boat from a far at busy marina that you are visiting. Welcome aboard.
