Has anyone followed up on the thread started a while back asking if there would be interest in getting New Found to make the fixed ports?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mort, Sven, It might be worth a call to NFM at 888.437.5512 on your own to get an answer. I spoke with them years ago about the possibility of beginning production again of a bronze, opening cat eye port they supplied to Ericson years ago for the Cruising 31. The bottom line was that they'd need at least six owners buying six each of them to justify the production run. Don't know if this encouragement enough to kick start process, hope it helps. Glyn

Glyn,

Did you ask them if they could chrome them for you so they would be pretty ?

NFM Bronze.

Sven, Go ahead, make me everybody's whipping boy. If you have to know, I have the chrome removed from all my bronze in order to save weight, so there!! Glyn

If you can't get them to make them AND someone can loan me one for a pattern for a month; I am pretty sure I can get them made in smaller amounts.

How About Bomon?

Have you checked out Bomon? I recently purchased the four fixed ports from them for about $1100 including shipping from Canada. They have templates for E35-3 ports. I haven't installed them yet, a project for the winter, but they're sitting in my family room and look great.

More Fixed Port Conversation

This AM being in the Central Time Zone it was to early to call Newfound Metals......So, not to waste the time I decided to give Bomon a call....Prior to reading Lauras post.....and remembering a conversation I had with them at the Miami boat show year before last concerning the ones they made for Tim Reiley......

I spoke to a gentlemen named Alan....and the information he gave me is as follows.....

1) As I noted from previous information on Tims posting they cannot get the l l/2" radius to copy the Lewmars that we have.....and that a new tool for that radius would be $1000.00.

2) The price for the ports would be US$273.00 each plus freight.......if he could get an order to make up ten at a time he could reduce the price by 25.00 each.

3) They have made them for Ericsons other than the 35-3, and they are different.....going back to a post from "Roger", it is probably older models than the 35-3, so he has different templates that one would have to match up to determine a proper fit. The ones he has for the 35-3 require some modification to the jig sawed factory opening due to the difference in the radius.

With this in mind, I have another thought......If we can get ten of us together to purchase, the discount would amount to $1000.00, the cost of the new tool. I for one would rather spend the additional $100.00 rather than do the modification! This is of course assuming that they would fit all of the boats manufactured after 1983(the beginning of the 35-3) and if we can determine that they will fit other boats manufactured in that time frame. Also, I did not discuss this with Alan....that would be for another call.

Lets have some thoughts......and please keep the commentary on the subject at hand.

As a thought with regard to Newfound, with the above information I would as Loren expressed in a previous discussion, be very wary of commiting to a group buy. It could be a snake coming back to bite you.....

Modification for Bomon Ports

Hi, Mort-
You're right that the cut out is a bit smaller than the port Bomon can make. It does require a 1/4 inch trim in a couple of spots on the cut out but that's a lot easier than trying to make the opening smaller:) BTW, my boat is a 1985.

Spartan alternative?

Ericson E31 owners may be interested in trying Spartan opening ports, if New Found Metals doesn't come through.

Spartan makes the same cats eye shape. I doubt they are a drop in fit replacement for the E31 port but they look pretty close:

The ports shown in the picture are unpolished. They can also be ordered polished on the inside and unpolished outside.

Spartan makes the same cats eye shape.

Well, not really...

The cats eye or elliptical shape ports were fitted to the E31C seen here:

<a href="http://s128.photobucket.com/albums/p200/cruizin31/?action=view&current=e31port.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p200/cruizin31/e31port.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The later version of the boat, the Independence 31, was fitted with
opening ports that were rectangular, with radiused corners.

The Spartan ports are ovals, where the ends are tangent to the arc
of a circle. A seemingly small difference in the abstract, but it makes
a big difference visually. The ellipse has got to be one of the prettiest
shapes around for ports, and can be found on vintage catboats as well
as the latest Hinckley picnic boat. I seem to remember Glyn telling me
once that Port Townsend foundry might still have this pattern. How
'bout it Glyn?

Well, it sounds like we're talking about apples and oranges here. I was responding to Glyn's post above and assumed he was talking about the ports on his boat. I apologize for the use of the word "cats eye" if it caused confusion, although I have heard the small fixed ports on Ericson's described as "cats eye" ports in reviews and the Spartan ports are of similar shape.

The Spartan ports could work as replacements for the E31I ports depending on the measurement. Although the sides are round, the tops and bottoms are straight parallel lines. They are often used as off the shelf replacements for smaller, narrower, rectangular ports. One need only radius the sides of the cut-out and enlarge the distance between the top and bottom as necessary. Their cut-out is 14 x 5 1/4 inches. I am not shilling for Spartan. I am just trying to be helpful. If anyone has a better suggestion for an off the shelf replacement, feel free to share.

Clarifying the muddy waters.

All, In reading my former post on the topic, I could have been little more clear and for that I apologize. By in large, the Cruising 31 (hulls #01 through #24) were fitted at the factory with cat eye ports. That said, hulls #23 & #24 were caught up in the transition to the Independence 31 and had a variation of the rectangular, opening Perko port lights used from hull #25 on up to the end of Ericson's production of this boat at hull #71. They would have been used on the last three 31's made by two other different companies but for the fact that only one, #72 was ever completed with #73 & #74 languishing and never completing manufacture. Hull #72 does indeed have Perko port lights fitted, I've been aboard and actually spent a night sleeping on her. Off topic but of possible minor interest to some, I sawed off six feet of the bow only, no deck, of hull #74 in Waukegan, IL and had it trucked out here to Santa Monica, CA and it's stored safe and sound my garage. I cut the hull number off the transom as well which sits framed on the wall over my desk as I type this. Would it be fair to say that I own two 31's? Nah. Hope this clears things up a bit on the subject of cat eye ports on the early 31's and the Perko rectangular ones used in the later 31's. Of greater note regarding cat eye ports on the E31, only one boat, Marty's hull #22 has an opening one and only that one (in the head), the rest in his boat are fixed as are the rest of the Cruising 31 fleet, all styles opening and fixed, made by NFM. Cheers, Glyn Judson, E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey, CA
