has anyone taken their 35-3 thru the cape may canal. Fixed bridge height is supposed to be 55' and mast height of the 35-3 should be 50'.
Thanks.

Mast Height

STM,

I haven't. But, thought I'd offer this. My E-28 has a mast height of 36ft from the deck and almost 45ft from the water line. You might want to check if that 50ft you mention is from the deck. Because you then need to add the distance from the waterline to the mast step on the deck. This might put you closer to 60 ft. Not enough to clear the bridge if it doesn't lift or swing.

Mast height

The I measurement is taken from the top of the center halyard sheave to a point an inch or so below the hull/deck joint by the chainplates. To this you need to add your loaded freeboard from this point to the water, plus whatever you have sticking up above the halyard sheave (a few inches of mast plus wind instruments and lights).

You should be able to squeak under the 55' bridges, though...

Mast Height Above Water

The 50 feet should be mast height above water per this document: http://www.ericsonyachts.org/infoexchange/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=32&id=676 so theoretically you should be okay.

There was a discussion about this same canal on cruisersforum.com, this guy made it through and his mast height is 53.5': http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f2/cape-may-canal-bridges-21346.html

If in doubt you could try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epz6BBZm__0&feature=related

The link Rowan provided is great - it is the first time I have seen my E/35-II listed as "Short", because short it is. My mast is 40' (I measured it), and that is deck to top of mast, giving me the 43.75' MHAW. I printed that sheet out. Thanks, Rowan.

No problem, I'm glad I could help, but the thanks should really go to whomever submitted that document to this site. There's tons of great info on this site (in addition to the discussion boards).

Mast Height

Some of the Ericson documents are contradictory on the mast height of the 35-3 when I tried to figure it out. When the mast was out of the boat, and the boat was on the hard, I tried to measure everything to determine how much room we needed for our boat with windex and VHF. The number I came up was 53 feet with the possibility that the VHF might touch. There is probably a small variance per boat based on waterline, mast rake, and masthead gear.

I had a friend way-back-when that went under a bridge backwords so he could check out the height with the VHF (which would bend) before it could knock out his expensive anenometer.
