Independence 31 engine access

Recently bought my 31. Have discovered that access to engine compartment is crap! Looks like a little person is supposed to go thru port lazarette?? I can't fit!! Question:

Suggestions on mods to boat i.e. Cutting cockpit floor between pedestal and companionway to add an access hatch?? Any other suggestions

Don't know about the 31 but I pay a nephew or yard kid to go down there and then watch from the quarter berth to tell them what to do. They actually love it.

No quarter berth on this boat?? I too had to hire a guy who could snake thru the lazerette but I need to find a way to get me in there!!
