Heat Exchanger end cap gaskets

Just changed my zinc on my universal M25 XP with 3 inch h/x. I now want to change the end cap gaskets and inspect the inside of H/X my question is can I remove the caps with the engine coolant filled. I assume that this is the raw water side but I just want to be sure and not fill bilge with antifreeze. Thanks

Speaking of which, does anybody have a source for aluminum or manganese pencil anodes? It has become painfully obvious that zinc doesn’t work for boats that mostly float in fresh water.

I suppose one could make them from rod stock...
