Exhaust on E35-2

My 1970 E35-2 has a heat ex-changer on the exhaust aft of the engine. The heat ex-changer consists of a 1.25"x 48" galvanized pipe inside a 2"x 42" galvanized pipe with inlet and outlet for water. The engine (Atomic 4) is mounted above the keel. I am replacing the old galvanized pipe with exhaust hose. I don't know if I need the heat ex-changer when using the hose. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Bill's suggestion to head over to the Moyer Forum is a good one.

To get started, is this heat exchanger before or after the water injection point on the exhaust?

The exhaust is divided into two sections - the hot section which goes from the engine to the point where the engine cooling water is injected, and the "cooler section" which is everything after the injection point.

You cannot use rubber exhaust hose in the hot section - you need to use metal and if going for a cast iron exhaust, use black iron, not galvanized. Galvanized will off-gas toxic vapors when it gets hot.
