I recently acquired an Ericson 29 without sails or boom. By my measurements the mast height (from the deck, not cabin top) is 38.26ft, which matches the 38.30ft listed height of the Ericson 29 tall rig. According to published dimensions I should get a 9.92ft boom and measure sails for tall rig. I have a 13.79ft wood boom from another boat that I could cut down – resting on the cabin it barely clears the back stay.
If I am not mistaken, a balanced sail plan can be designed on a range of boom lengths. If so, what considerations should determine the length of the boom?
