Cockpit Fiberglass

Bepi

E27 Roxanne
Roxanne at one point had a large number of instruments on the companionway bulkheads and on the sides of the cockpit. There were plastic covers with no caulking loosely screwed into the fiberglass so I filled them in. Here are a few photos of the work. Once the glassing projects are complete then she's going to get a paint job.
I recently came across a large sheet of plexiglass. Though only a quarter inch I made companionway hatch, a nice window on cold days. It's not thick enough for cruising or security but it brightens things up when I stay on the boat. I use the two part wood ones while I'm away. I am thinking about half inch plexiglass someday and when the time comes can use this one as a template.

As the old warning goes: "be careful what you wish for".
Half inch plexiglass is very heavy. Very.

No vision out, of course, but I made a one piece replacement for the heavy teak hatch board set on our boat. I used honeycomb for coring, but foam core would work as well. Weighs only a few pounds. I could put a plexiglass 'window' in it, but have not felt the need to do so yet.

Well, no heavier than the original teak. I've turned into a big fan of one-piece acrylic hatch board for Ericsons, although they're larger of course than individual boards. Mine stores in a bag in the lazarette. (All the acrylic on the 38 is 1/2", but I think it's 3/8ths on other boats.)
