Another factor to consider when trying to match finishes, is photochemical oxidation in the wood. Mahogany darkens over time when exposed to sunlight. When making up sample boards,
I would experiment with leaving the wood out in the sun (or a uv light source) before applying anything. This can be helpful if your new wood color is close, but the overall tone is lighter
than the old stuff.

The brown mahogany stain does seem to match really well. I'll be sailing with some friends out of Kemah over the 4th, but I plan to tackle this the following weekend. I'll let you know how it goes!
