Boom Vang

I have a '70 Ericson 30 slipped at Lake Mead, Nevada. I do not have a boom vang installed and am looking for direction on if the boom is capable of a boom vang and secondly does anyone know the proper measurements?
I don't want to weaken the boom and am apprehensive about drilling holes and installing a bail on the boom and the main.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might contact Garhauer. They build some very nice rigid vangs (thus allowing you to do away with the topping lift) for not too much more than a "soft" vang would cost. They are real easy to communicate with and will walk you through the measurement process. Rather than a bail, they will build a plate to fit the profile of your boom, and I suspect that once everything is bolted up, the boom will be stronger than it was. I am extremely pleased with mine, and had a pretty good "soft" vang before.
