I tried a friction only type..... It didn't work at all.
That lockable type might be better though.
I wanted something that I wouldn't always be fiddling with, but every time the main got adjusted you had to mess with it the darn thing anyhow. In the end I decided to stick with a traditional preventer line running to the bow for down wind sailing.

I just run a line from the boom through a stanchion base and back to a cleat in the cockpit--the usual preventer rig. You do need a quick release in case of an uncommanded jibe with a preventer on.

I guess I don't see the need for this particular specialized device. Could be missing something.
