Batten down the hatches!

I'm writing this post from Avalon Harbor, where I've been for one week. I'm planning to stay one more week and leave next Sunday. Right now the boat is gently rocking on mooring 70 and the weather is lovely. But the "gently" part is about to change in the next few hours. Here's the NWS forecast for this area:

This should be fun!

I'm not worried, though, because I'm nicely tucked in behind the Casino, so this is a lovely spot to be. But it should be quite interesting. All I know is, I'm glad I won't be out in the 10-13' seas with a 7 second period! :0 (This zone forecast is for a pretty large area, and my guess is that the largest seas will be west of here. But the ones in the San Pedro channel will still be nothing to sneeze at.)

This is perfect weather for curling up with a book. :nerd:

Stay tucked in and safe.
Thanks! I mean it when I say this should be fun. I love laying in my bunk and listening to the wind howl outside. I've also got everything I need aboard so I won't have to go ashore, namely bacon, eggs, and coffee! Oh, and did I mention I've got bacon?

There's a guy in a Cal 29 anchored outside of the harbor, in front of an area called Descanso. He positioned himself just outside the mooring field. (The locals here will know exactly the spot I'm talking about.) He was already there when I arrived last Sunday and it appears he intends to stay put and ride it out at anchor in that spot, which is pretty exposed to the NW and especially to the N. (My harbor patrol buddy said the fellow is kind of, well..."different.") I sure hope he is going to be OK.

Looks like there was some trouble in San Diego....

The winds we had last night created some problems in San Diego: http://fox5sandiego.com/2015/11/16/gale-force-winds-take-a-toll-on-boats-along-coronado-mission-bay/

Everything was fine here in Avalon. My harbor patrol buddy said they registered the highest gust at 46 knots. But overall it was less than I was expecting. There were indeed some pretty large gusts throughout the night but the sustained winds were not as high as I figured they would be.

The seas in the channel did look pretty angry today, as best as I could see them from where I am. Apparently they were ugly enough to where they cancelled the Express boat service. My friend's son was stranded "overtown," so he took his kids to Disneyland instead! :)

It's actually rather calm right now.

Descanso in a northerly is nuts.

Even if he has lots of bacon.

O_O Was he still there this morning?
Yes, he was. I actually didn't go ashore today but I specifically looked on the web cam to see if he was alright. There's also an unattended mast-less Coronado 25 or 27 anchored slightly east of him and it is still there also. Guess the boats down in San Diego were not quite so lucky.
