4 touch up questions....

Hi,

I recently bought an 73 Ericson. Aside from thoroughly washing it, I want to do some simple cosmetic improvement. I'd appreciate your advice on the following questions (for each I have attached a photo):

1) The decorative blue stripe on the side is fading, and I want to paint it. Should I use marine paint or regular paint? http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rhbj03/detail?.dir=/12e6&.dnm=b145.jpg

2) The fiberglass deck is showing its age. In the case of automobiles I'd go to Macco and get a paint job; what is the nautical equivalent of a paint job? http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rhbj03/detail?.dir=/12e6&.dnm=84a4.jpg

3) The fiberglass cabin ceiling has some cracks. It is NOT leaking water, just seems ugly. What can I do with this? http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rhbj03/detail?.dir=/12e6&.dnm=e34b.jpg

4) Vinyl wall panel shows mold spots. How can I treat this? http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rhbj03/detail?.dir=/12e6&.dnm=4670.jpg

Thanks a lot!!

Hi,

I have an E27, and when I took posession of it, I too did a thorough wash-down. And one of the things I noticed was the boats dull look to the fiber glass. I used a fiber glass restore wash, and that seemed to work fine on the oxidation problem, and that brought out a brighter look to it.

As for the strip, I took a scrub brush, and scrubbed away the oxidation, and that too, brought out a brighter/cleaner look. The strip along the under side of the gunwale is vinyl (I believe), and if you need to replace it, that shouldn't be problem. Any decal place in your local area should be albe to provide you with materials to handle that.

As for the repair to the crazing in your cabin, I do not have an answer for that, I have the same problem, and haven't tackled that, yet. But I think you can fill that with a filler for fiber glass areas.

I hope that helps...good luck.:)

Before painting the sides or replacing vinyl tape, I would try using a commercial grade rubbing compound on the fiberglass and the tape. I use a 2-speed grinder/polisher with a wool pad with the rubbing compound. Without applying a lot of pressure on the grinder, it takes out the oxidation. When finished, apply a good marine wax. This process makes my '80 30+ look pretty nice for an old boat. Good luck.
