    1972 Ericson 35-II

Well, the sprocket for the chain was damaged during the breaking of the chain/cable. Either the fact that it was chipped and bent was a factor in the breaking of the chain/cable or the breaking of the chain/cable was a factor in the sprocket being chipped and bent. Regardless, I had a new...

    1972 Ericson 35-II

Hey Nick, I've rebuilt my steering a couple times. Once when the cable to chain failed and once when I upgraded my rudder to the Foss Cal 40 modified rudder. My boat's across the bay and I'm in Sausalito quite often. I'm happy to take a look and give you a free opinion if you like. Lemme know.

Winch Rebuild: "Barient" Replacement Pawls from Lewmar--just say NO!

"Winch covers slow that process down, allegedly." As I'm getting ready to service my winches, I thought I'd go through these old posts to see what I could glean. It's funny, I've always wondered why someone would bother with canvas winch covers. If it works, it's worth it. Does it work, of...

Hello Everyone, I'm looking to replace the tiller head at the top of the rudder post for my E35-2. Thanks

E35-2 Anchor and Anchor Locker Set Up

I'll definitely be going with heavier cables and running them back to the house bank. I went with the V2 003 Gypsy only. The 8-plait line is a great suggestion. Thanks

E35-2 Anchor and Anchor Locker Set Up

Thanks. But I'm definitely going with 3/8" for two reasons. #1 with the exception of the weight in the bow, I prefer the weight keeping the anchor down. And #2...I already purchased the gypsy for 3/8" (of course).

E35-2 Anchor and Anchor Locker Set Up

Definitely good thinking. I'm not planning on cruising with this boat outside of, perhaps, Northern Mexico...perhaps. I'm mostly just a big fan of keeping my shank down low. But I'm sure 100' of chain would be plenty of weight, outside of the kind of wind and seas that would probably drag the...

E35-2 Anchor and Anchor Locker Set Up

Hello Everybody, I'm replacing the old Sea Tiger manual anchor windlass with an electric Lewmar. In doing this I need to replace my old 50' of 3/8 chain and 150' feet of 5/8" 3 strand with G40 3/8 chain and maybe yes/maybe no on the rope. My main issue is if I move to 200' of chain, I end up...

WTB: Yacht Specialties sprocket for steering pedestal

Yeah, I don't hear a lot of stories about pedestals crumbling over the years so I'm certainly going to prod Edson regarding their failure data. Thanks

WTB: Yacht Specialties sprocket for steering pedestal

Christian, I remember watching your video of your solo voyage out to Hawaii and back and your steering failed. But I don't recall the issue. What was the failure? Thanks

WTB: Yacht Specialties sprocket for steering pedestal

Thanks for all the great input. Here's where I am: I'm shying away from replacing any and/or all of the pedestal with old parts. I enjoy sailing considerably more than repairing and the idea of taking the time, energy, effort and money to make the repair, only to have to repeat the repair...

WTB: Yacht Specialties sprocket for steering pedestal

Hey Guys, Broke the steering chain on my E35-2. Had a new one built just to find it wouldn't sit on the sprocket properly. On closer inspection I learned the teeth on the sprocket were all beat to hell. So...I'm looking for an 11 tooth sprocket for a size 50 chain that fits a 1 1/8" shaft. I...

South Beach Riggers or KKMI in San Francisco Bay

I purchased my new-to-me 1980 E35-2 at the end of last year. My plan was to sail this summer and haul the boat in the fall for maintenance, paint, etc. I decided to install a Dutchman flaking system last month and as my toping lift was fixed at the top of the mast, Hood Sails had South Beach...
