What makes a good project boat?

I would make the demarkation line between project and otherwise as functionality. Good bones as Loren mentions is paramount. If however you can use the boat and continue with projects than you cross that line. Sure my overhead sags a bit, my sails are tired, I have antiquated equipment...as...

    Survey costs + bottom paint

As an ex surveyor you should first look at the SAMS site (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS. There is a mail order surveyors called AMS or something and they have some real wingnuts. NAMS is a stiff upper lip membership. SAMS has accredited surveyors and rookies called SA. I...

    hand starting Volvo penta diesel

Spent many years starting LISTER 3 cyl diesels on Lifeboats, Emergency Generators and such. These engines are air cooled and do not rely on a cooling system or battery powered starting system. Some have hydraulic hand pumped starters. We had problems in the North Pacific Alaska Waters due to...

    1981 E-36 Ron Holland

Thanks Seth. You don't know how each very small comment can have an impact. Somewhere you mentioned...originally came out with a tiller. My Italian PO only could tell me " Oh yes, Rob! there is an emergency steering tiller!' which was this massive, still in canvas 6ft tiller! I spent some...

The story so far - New(ish) E36RH Owner

Here are a list of questions: Is your heat exchanger still mounted on the back of your engine? Mine is just laying on the side with gops of hoses. Is your electric water heater just aft of the shaft? Are your cockpit drains really long hoses to the back drains? Where doe the baby back stays...

The story so far - New(ish) E36RH Owner

I love your list and truely appreciate any pictures. I just purchased Hull #1 and see similar "issues". I am mostly tracing systems and wondering why things are as they are. For instance someone mentioned the boat came out as a tiller version....this explains the brand new "emergency" tiller...

    1981 E-36 Ron Holland

Hello Seth; Just purchased this boat in San Diego. Would be interested in any history that you have. Originally purchased it for access to slip but is a good boat for me to get up to speed again. Previous owner just owned it while he looked for another (Hunter) and barely sailed it. Spent...

Mother of all Broaches (At least to me!)

Joe the Bosun married and decided to have a sailing honeymoon with his non-sailing new bride on their 35 footer. They hit the straits of Juan De Fuca at the wrong time! Marriage lasted 6 months. My sailing buddy's wife can be a bit timid in a blow. Pete was smart enough to show her a few...

New Owner, 1981 E36 RH San Diego

Hello all; Well we jumped back into it after about 10 years. I wasn't quite ready but when are you. We moved down here to San Diego around when COVID hit and have been moving all this time. We left northern california mostly because of fires, we have been 7 in the last 12 years. Slowly I...

    Ericson 36 for $5K?

I just bought a 36 RH Ericson in San Diego with a slip. In Dana Point you can not transfer a slip. If you have a boat with a slip you probably can upgrade but otherwise you have something like a month to move it.
