    40 years of monohull "evolution"

Cool action shot! I’ve noticed many/all (?) Catalinas share that boxy aft shape - down to the 18 and 22 footers. Is this the result of a performance consideration or is it just to allow more space down below? I’m not very schooled by way of hull designs, would assume keel shape has some relation...

Fairing, sanding, and painting the deckhead

The most difficult part of respirator-work for me is needing to shave to get a good seal! Stay safe with all the particulates, haven’t used an intentional dust extractor before so curious how it does with things

    E32-3 Traveler in the cockpit?

I do the "run-the-line-forward-under-the-boom-then-down-and-aft-along-the deck thing" and it's just what's simple and works because of the dodger. Out of the 3 Ericsons (all 27's) i'm familiar with in our marina 2 of us have a dodger and the above mentioned rigging, we both have tillers. The...

    “Endurance” wreck discovery (2022)

Just came across this article about the discovery of Endurance, from 2022. Was new information to me, however. Seeing the picture of the stern put chills throughout my body! “Without any exaggeration this is the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen—by far.” - marine archaeologist and...

Marina etiquette with others peoples’ stuff

Been meaning to post this for a while: what’s the etiquette for dealing with others’ sloppy chit? A lot of time there may be shore power lines mostly in the water, an upwind dock neighbor may have a boat that’s nearly derelict and their dock lines are almost chaffed through, or a roller furler...

    Rebedding leaking windows

The “quick hacky” option that “might work” could also be to just reseal the exterior trim. Did this over the summer with sikaflex and have had a drip free year so far. a lot of this might depend on how much the legacy, interior frame sealant has held up. In my case it was maybe between 90-95%...

Baltimore bridge struck by ship, collapses

Dang, different root cause but the only thing that reminded me of is the old Tacoma narrows collapse. Hope everyone is safe

E34 Pink Panther visit - what I learned (with pictures)

I’m no expert but from a quick read through nothing seems like an immediate deal breaker, personally. A lot of this stuff seems common for a boat that’s been “for sale” for years: dirty running rigging, water stains, etc. The leak from the foreword hatch is something I dealt with myself this...

    Universal 5432 exhaust elbow parts?

https://www.mcmaster.com/#95715K113 the graphite gasket stock above, according to the spec, could be one option (seems the item above has a 10 week lead time at present moment). For cutting bolt holes in the material there are sharpened cylindrical stamps sold at hardware stores like harbor...

    Universal 5432 exhaust elbow parts?

@SteveOO you can buy gasket stock, in sheet form from places like McMaster carr etc. you then just cut out whatever shape needed from the stock. Perhaps an auto parts store would carry exhaust gasket material as well. If the engine is non turbo you’re unlikely to see exhaust gas temps above...

Removing double stick tape from sail

Have never dealt with adhesive on a sail like this but only ever use a heat gun and/or solvents to remove goop. On a sail the heat gun is probably a bad idea (maybe trying it on a warm sunny day could be a better idea). Perhaps a mild solvent like 30-50% isopropyl alcohol and a. Flat plastic...

    Propeller for E35 Mk II

In an adjacent thread, Christian’s “propwalk illustrated”, goes into a little detail about props. Seems the AutoProp and feathering props in general are quite advantageous and recommended. I only have experience with fixed 2 or 3 blades though and no comment on pitch/shaft sizing etc. Others may...

    E35 mk 2 Keel Bolts?

Indeed, it was one of the reasons I’d gravitated towards Ericsons as opposed to other makes. Have read tha keel bolts offer better “flex” when accidentally grounding or during a bottom collision but is a reasonable tradeoff

DECK STEP MAST / RUDDER HANDLING / RUST HELP: 1975 35-2 Prospective Buyer

Took a few minutes to realize this thread began almost six years ago! Very cool when things come full circle like this though. I’m not an IG user but would love to see updates on this forum or similar. Cheers

Newbie questions about an Ericson 34 [and Shipping a Boat by Truck]

The pacific sea craft/ericson/Olson dynamic is pretty interesting to me - Pacific Seacraft was listed as being a previous owner of my E27. Think a PSC dealer/brokerage owned it at one point in the early 00s but it lead to some confusion, still not totally sure what the deal was. two ice boxes?!
