I recommend sewing the lines together -- end-to-end -- and also wrapping with tape. You'll have a difficult problem if the lines become separated inside the boom. It's worth the extra time and effort to sew the lines together to make sure that you don't get separation inside the boom.
This will not be much help, but . . . . I have an '87 Ericson 38-200 and recently replaced my throttle and transmission cables. I purchased the cables from Edson (505-995-9711). My cables were 14' (transmission) and 16' (throttle) in length. I have no idea re the length of cables on your...
Yes. I have a Jabsco oil pump/bucket that I use to remove the oil. The pump motor has a black rubber tube that comes off the pump and then there is a smaller diameter clear plastic tube that inserts into the black rubber tube. The clear plastic tube is flexible, but easily inserts into the...
Yes, I got the oil changed. I did two things differently. First, I let the engine warm up more and thus the oil was warmer and running more fluidly. And second, I realized that I needed to be more patient. I could get about 4 quarts of oil removed relatively easily. Then I waited for about...
Thanks, Loren. The service manual says oil capacity in the Universal M40 is 8.0 -- 8.5 quarts. I'll double check to see whether there is a drain hose on the oil pan, but I didn't see it this past weekend.
Hello, Mates. This last weekend, I started the process of changing the oil on my Universal M40 ('87 Ericson 38-200). I have a Jabsco oil change pump that I use to remove the old oil by inserting the clear plastic tube down the opening where the oil dip stick goes. The problem I ran into is...
I fixed my leaking portlights as follows. Removed the portlights and meticulously cleaned off the old caulk on the inside of the metal portlight frame with a wire brush and small screwdriver --- take your time and get the old caulk out of the small grooves in the portlight frame. To state the...
Several years ago, I had some leakage at the mast boot on my '87 38-200. I purchased an innertube for a small tire (my recollection is that the innertube was for a wheelbarrow) and then cut the innertube so that it would wrap around the mast a couple times. I used some sort of sealant at the...
Yes, that is correct. There are two sets of pawls in the ST Barient 21. One set of pawls takes the "standard" size spring that is readily available from multiple sources. But the 2nd set of pawls is smaller and requires a smaller spring. The only place I could find the smaller spring was...
UPDATE: I'm pleased to report that I recently received the springs for the small pawls on my Barient 21 that I ordered from Hutton Winches/Australian Yacht Winch. The springs were the correct size and the freshly cleaned, oiled and greased Barient 21 is back in service. I did have to make one...
I spoke to a Lewmar technician yesterday morning who had the Barient 21 service/parts manual. The tech advised that the manual shows only one size of pawl and pawl spring for the Barient 21. This is plainly WRONG, as I have the actual parts in hand --- at least for my Barient 21, there are...
Thanks, Dave. I looked into that option. I purchased some of those pawl replacement springs, and they fit great for my Barient 32 and 24 winches, and also fit for the "larger" pawl in the Barient 21. But they are too big for the smaller pawl in the Barient 21. I spoke to a technician at...
I've owned Valhalla for about 4 years and this is the first time I've serviced the winches. I doubt that any modifications have been made --- all the parts fit very nicely and snuggly together --- and the winch was in good working condition.
