US documentation for cruising, questions

Sven

Seglare
We're going through the documentation process to let us legally leave US waters and enter other countries.

I'm hoping someone here who has gone through the process might help with some of the questions ?

1 - "Endoresements for which application is made" - do we just check off "Recreational" or should we include "Registry" ?

2 - "Was built at" is that Ericsonyachts in Costa Mesa Ca ?

3 - Certification. The undersigned specify that they are citizens. Are the undersigned the only owners or is it the managing owner only ? A part owner (non-majority) can be a legal permanent resident but can't sign the certification ?

Thanks,

-Sven

Sven, call the vessel documentation center. They have very nice and knowledgeable folks there. They will walk you through the process.

One of the few government agencies that is really very helpful.

Many thanks Tim !

Nancy does people so I'll ask her to get on the phone with them :egrin:

Yes, give them a call, they are very helpful. Be aware that there is a several month backlog for recreational endorsements; ask them about it.

I just filed to have my boat returned to documentation as it had lapsed in 2007 before I owned the boat.

Hi Mark,

We're probably not leaving the country until October 23rd so we should be OK but I'm glad you told us about the backload so we get know to get it started.

Thanks !

Your boat was built at the Deere Ave. factory, in the city of Irvine.

Martin,

Any chance you could tell me where mine was built?

I've been thinking about getting Whisper documented. I hope nobody inspects the hull for numbers, because I can't find any! They must be buried under gelcoat or something.

The HIN should be on the outside of the transom and quite probably on a "hidden" molding somewhere inside as well.
Is it printed on your state registration and title?

Mark,
The 34 T would have been built at the Deere ave factory in Irvine. It would
be interesting to do a poll of the 70's vintage Ericsons to see who has
hull numbers actually in the gelcoat. My '71 39 didn't have one.

Martin, I know it would be asking allot but would you consider creating a list for all the models (or as many as you recall) and putting it in the documents section. I am curious where my 35-2 was born and suspect quite a few others would check it out as well. Edd:egrin:

I have seen that list Tom. What I refer to is which model was produced at what location. I am sure that over 20 years they came to life from many lines and some lines were probably moved around from time to time as the company grew and contracted. Edd

Deere Avenue in Irvine

Basically until PSC took over, the Ericson factory was at 1931 (if not the exact # this is close) Deere Avenue in Irvine, CA.

I know the vast majority of pre PSC Ericsons were built here, and they had been there at least since the early 70's.

Martin can probabaly fill in any gaps, but when I worked there all of the old molds and equipment was at this location and appeared to have been there for a long time.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Martin and Seth.

Loren, I've been searching my transom for 4.5 years, and no numbers have materialized. Nor has the HIN jumped out at me from anywhere in the interior.

Fortunately, the registration and title documents reflect the HIN, and I recently discovered hand-written hull numbers on the bottoms of Vee-berth foam, which corroborate the documents.

Hmmm... sorry 'bout that! I wonder if the transom was ever re-painted / gel coated.
FWIW, one of the best boat restorers in our region has a "reverse Dymo labeler" and always puts the original HIN back on the upper transom as the last of the glass work is done and just before the LPU paint is applied.
Maybe other boat repairers are not so careful?

LA County property tax collector

You probably know this but I just thought I would share a friend's recent ordeal with the LA County property tax collector. When he moved his boat to Mexico back in 2007 he did not notify them and now he is getting hit with back taxes and late fees. He had been out of the Country since then and did not get any forwarding notices.

I had a similar problem with the LA County property tax collector regarding my boat when I sold my house in Tujunga and bought a new one in San Pedro. Although I was getting Tax bills on my new house in San Pedro, they did not send me bills for my boat, even though the same organization handles both Property taxes on my boat and house. It took a few months to straighten that out, but they did not charge me late fees because it was their mistake.

You know that little form they send out every year wanting to know if your boat has been sold, junked or abandoned or the location has changed? Just make sure someone State Side keeps and eye out for it and that the LA County property tax collector is informed.

Yeah, the LA county tax collector is looking under every rock. I can understand
taxes on personal property, but can someone explain how they can tax
the water on a slip I rent?

Anyway, there are basically only a few places your Ericson could be built.
The first factory was on Struck Ave. in the city of Orange. Then they
moved to Deere in Irvine. I'm not sure what year, but I can find out.
They remained there for most of the company's life, farming out some
glass work to a location in Mexico in the late 80's on a couple of models.
Then as we all know, they folded around '90, and PSC bought up the
tooling for the 34, and 38 and built some boats for a time. Most of the
time, when a model was discontinued, the tooling was destroyed but
the molds for the 31, were bought and sold. Glyn knows all those
particulars. Gotta run, but that's it in a nutshell.

The 1972(?) brochure for the E-27 I down loaded from this site has a address of 1931 Deere Ave. Santa Ana, CA 92705 I assume it's a 1972 brochure because there is also a parts list in the down load section that has a date of 1972 and says F.O.B Santa Ana.

That brochure on the last page the following hulls: E-23, E-25, E-27, E-29, E-30, E-32, E-34, E-34T, E-35, EC-36 and E-39B.
