Highlights from this weekend's MS Regatta

We placed 2nd in our class behind a very fast C&C 35. Our Class had 4 Ericsons in it. Our 35-3, another 35-3, a 38 and a classic 41.

Two Ericsons side by side. Cordelia and a 29 from another class.

Overall a great day for sailing. Good steady winds and we finished just ahead of the rain. A little fog at the start but nothing too bad.

Hey thanks for the pics!

That is one big genoa on Cordelia, do you know if it's bigger that 155%?

A well sailed C and C is hard to beat.

Good job!

It is actually a 150%. I had a 155 but the foot was too long for the genoa lead tracks to be tuned properly. The J measurement on a 35-3 is almost 16 ft.

BTW, The C&C has a retrofitted Ericson keel!

Nice.. very nice.. the 35-3 is a winner!

Cool... The boat Enterprise sure had an interesting instrument cluster at the binnacle.

binnacle mount

Here's a better picture. I couldn't find a white fiberglass mount, so threw a dashboard together out of some teak I had lying around. Ths problem is the original sizing of the Yacht Specialties bracket doesnt fit anything, so either I replace the entire binnacle bracket with one from another company or use the teak. I might switch to smoked lexan at the end of this season. Cordelia beat me good, but than again, I only have a high cut 135, which I find better for all around use, but not great for racing in less than 15 kts.

Genoa size

IIRC, you can get very close to 155% on the std track, but only with a very low clew height. This makes for a great upwind sail, but not as good as for reaching on the outboard track. Also you have almost no aft adjustment to flatten the sail at the upper end of the big genoa

Some owners opt for a 12-16" extension-so they can get a full size #1 (155%) with a "normal" clew height (about 12-14" off the deck) and have a nice 8-12" of adjustment for the car position (according the wind strength).

The easier choice is to limit yourself to about a 153% sail- which is not much of a sacrifice, given the boats' generally powered up nature (by the time you have about 12-15 knots TWS you are ready for a little smaller/flatter sail)...

This is a reality on the whole series (new 32, 34, 35-3 and all the 38's)-which I fought unsuccessfuly during my time there..

Cheers,
S
