There is no slippage from the trans observed, right? Some small drips do not preclude a well operating tranny. I think your plan B is a good option. Plus you still have some time to try it some more in your well protected waters.
BTW, I did not move the engine the engine forward to swap my trans out. I just lifted it in place off the rear motor mounts. Not a fun project, but doable.
