I believe that if you are at a total loss on what tension, if you stay in 10-15% of the breaking strength of the wire, you are OK. The Loos gauges have ranges printed right on them. Check out this set of instructions from their site:

Remember, as you are looking at all this, to keep your masthead centered, and make sure you keep it in column. You can check the center by using your main halyard to measure to the chain plates for the upper shrouds. Try sighting up the backstay to see if you hook off port or starboard. If you can stand back, even better. If you can borrow an extra set of eyeballs to independently make observations and then see if you agree on bent or not, better yet.
