Salon table repair

Last season, I saw a video where someone used the salon table as a sort of bed frame. Nifty design I thought, and gave it a try the next time out on the hook. Alas, gravity being what it is, one edge of the table basically snapped at the dowels. Any ideas on repairing this to ensure it doesn't happen again? I assume I need to drill out the existing dowels, replace with new ones and some wood glue, and go from there?

Glue it.

Ours did that too. In our case, it looked like there was almost no glue in the joint from the factory, and all the dowels were still intact. I glued it back up with wood glue and clamped it - no extra reinforcement, but I did consider it. Then some light sanding and a couple coats of varnish and its better than new. Our two kids and an adult sometimes sleep on it, so it gets a lot of use and so far has been holding up good.
