Coaming Penetrations

My E39 came with these. Is there a better way? It appears to be PVC pipe simply caulked in and sanded flush.

Does the "hole" or pipe go all the way hrough into the cockpit? If it does could a line run through it for some reason? I can see someones logic trying to save the gelcoat from wear by doing this..

Yes, the PVC goes all the way through. They are lined up with the rope clutches, so it was definitely a way to get the control lines into the cockpit without going up and over the coaming. Plus it aligns vertically with the rope cluches very nicely.

Has anyone else done this to their boat?
