NFM porthole screens, 6 months later

We expect to be in bug infested waters from time to time so we bought screens for all the New Found Metals opening ports.

Now that we've had the screens installed for about 6 months we've decided to take them out until we actually arrive where the bugs are. The way the screens are mounted they keep you from getting rid of accumulated water in the portholes and as a result you can't open the portholes until the water has dried through evaporation or it all pours into the cabin :)

The problem only occurs if your opening ports are mounted on a gently sloping cabin side as they would be on most Ericsons.

Adjusting the posts and dogs for a leakproof seal with the screens in place was hit or miss and took a couple of rains to get right, so taking the screens out is something that takes some effort.

Don't take this as a complaint against the NFM product, I'm not sure how I would have designed the simple screens differently to avoid the problem. It is just a heads up that if you want to have the portholes open but don't have a real bug problem you might not want to get the screens.
