New Dodger O-34

Rate this Entry
The new dodger is on. The new clutches and larger winches are in place.
This is a newer fabric, "RECacril" that is rated better than "Sunbrella" for weave integrity and QC. Since cost is about the same, and the canvas shop has been having great luck with it, we decided to give it a try.

This post will need to be augmented with some better photos showing how it partially folds/pivots forward, still leaving the "windshield" in place.
That functionality involves having the side grab handle fold, with a sturdy SS pivot in the center.

It has sort of a split personality. From the dock it looks "too tall" and somewhat disproportionate to the cabin top profile. From within, and behind it at the helm, the height is just right, and I would not want it lower.

After many trips on may different boats over the decades I have deduced that it is very difficult to have perfect style and proportion in most sailboats under about 40 feet in a dodger. When off shore (or just out in rainy weather) I love having LOTS of protection, so I am content with trading some style for some function.
This is a situation where subjectivity is 100%. Maybe 105%.

Now adding more photos showing the Bimini and connector piece zipped in (when not using the main sheet).

Looks great Loren. I completely understand about the proportions. I'd love a dodger for our 911, but I have yet to see a picture of one that didn't look silly in profile. They always look too high, but like yours, I'm sure in use they are just right.

Clean and functional. The folding top is a great idea. I take off my dodger all summer here in the PNW but right about now, I'm wanting it back on...
