  1. New Dodger O-34

The new dodger is on. The new clutches and larger winches are in place.
This is a newer fabric, "RECacril" that is rated better than "Sunbrella" for weave integrity and QC. Since cost is about the same, and the canvas shop has been having great luck with it, we decided to give it a try.

This post will need to be augmented with some better photos showing how it partially folds/pivots forward, still leaving the "windshield" in place.
    That ...

  2. New Housetop Winches & Clutches

The June-July project was to 1) replace the factory Lewmar ST30 winch on each side, 2) replace the out-of-production clutch stoppers on each side, and 3) move both winches aft toward the rear edge and move the clutch array back to make them a lot easier to reach from the cockpit.
This also allowed a lot more room to use these devices with a wider "cruising" dodger in place.
The old narrow dodger was removed and sold to another Olson owner for the residual value of the SS ...

  3. Muffler Mod for an Olson

There is an old saw about choosing whether to "raise the bridge or lower the river" and after our new engine was installed we had to deal with this kind of decision.

To wit: the distance from the top of the exhaust elbow on the engine needs to be XX inches above the top of the water lift muffler body in order to avoid possible back flow.
Our former Universal diesel had a higher cast "neck" than the new Beta. The Beta has an optional higher one, but it would ...

  4. New Location: Racor & Lift Pump

As a part of the engine replacement project, we decided to move the Racor and electric lift pump out of the engine bay/compartment. Current ABYC "rules" seem to demand a metal bowl under the clear filter bowl, and this seems to defeat its purpose as a way to see any water accumulating. Further, the engine compartment in a small boat is crowded already.
So I moved the location for the coolant overflow tank from the under-cockpit-seat area to the engine compartment. This is visible ...

  5. Wiring & Engine Detail, part 2

These photos show the Halon bottle in place, and also a much better look at the inside of the compartment where the meter and terminal strip are mounted.
As an "extra" there is a shot of the new coolant overflow tank showing how the level in it almost matches the hose take-off place on the coolant cap. This is preferred to having it higher or lower.
The former Universal diesel had the coolant bottle mounted somewhat higher, in the port seat lazaretto under the hinged cockpit ...
