sorry about your tank. i'm feeling your pain as mine just gave up the ghost JUST as yours did.
my boat is the "t" cockpit/ wheel so the lazarette opening is only 18"x12" give or take.
i vented the tank for 2 weeks, broke the tank support tangs loose with a dremel and moved the tank...
i'd bet more than a few bux that it's your exhaust system as others have mentioned.
just got finished rebuilding my motor and another boat here in our marina.
my recommendation is to forget the OEM type riser and get a good water lift muffler and build your own dry section from galvanized...

I've got a E27 and was looking at that area specifically for additional storage.
Does that void take up the entire seatback area? That would be tons of blanket ,clothing, rope, dog and book storage!
