1983 Ericson 35-III for sale in San Diego, $12,500

That's a model that I wish I could do a full restoration on, similar to what we did for our boat in 2021. It's an example of an offshore-built and capable fast cruiser that is rarer than a unicorn in today's market. :egrin:

    Ericson 34-2 Portlight Size

If they are the same Lewmar model as the ones on our '88 boat, measure the size and cut-out size and check the on line specs. I would guess that EY was buying these by the gross..... When we did our refit, we upgraded to the current Lewmar "Atlantic" model opening ports and the new ones needed...

    New drinking water filter

https://membraloop.eu/en/ I just read about this in the new product section of the Feb. 2024, Yachting Monthly. Hyped as "chemical and electricity free in-line water filter with a lifespan of 10 years, that removes solids, bacteria, and even viruses." Expensive at well over $500. US, but it...

    Got Design Questions?

I am not understanding this statement. Semantics, perhaps. The forces from the shrouds are taken directly down to the TAFG by large-diameter SS Navtec rods, and some internal bulkhead connections. (Depending on EY model.) There is a great description of rigging force loading in the Brion Toss...

    Got Design Questions?

You should also consider the basic rigging design changes that appeared in the (late) 70's and into the 80's. Earlier (and proportionately narrower) fiberglass boats, including Ericson's, had chainplates glassed into the hull layup until the wider designs in the 80's rewarded having the shroud...

    Personal Reckoning

Yup, I have saved way too much "used" sand paper. It's hard to toss it out when it sorta kinda still has some grit on it. :) Data Point: when working with a pro ship wright on our re-fit, I noticed that he replaced sand paper the minute it started getting smooth. He said that labor time is a...

Sea trial for 1990 Ericson 34-2 next week

I would suggest starting a new thread as ownership raises questions. Then you can ID this boat specifically, as well. More pictures are always appreciated, too. I find that my "old" blog entries here are a nice history and often a source of satisfaction, but that's probably just me.

    Ericson 23-2 backstay question

Welcome to the Ericson site! I hope some owners can provide backstay info for you.

E35-2 flaws and things to look for

There are prior threads about inspecting the starboard chainplate where some have had rot in that bulkhead. That said, it's pretty common to rebed and carefully check chainplates and the surrounding deck structure on any boat over 25 years old.

Hove to Speed and Direction [and Reef Considerations]

Small crew or single handing also requires that personal safety and condition of the boat must override constant tuning & futzing. At least for multiple day or week voyages. When I look at some very real and un-sexy blogs of single handers with months/years into their journey, they all spend a...

    Shaft anodes

We boat in fresh water, and changed to aluminum 5 or 10 seasons ago.

Hove to Speed and Direction [and Reef Considerations]

One small bit of trivia about the "Cunningham", if I may. I have read that it originated as a means to move the draft in the main. This goes back to a time when goose necks were on a short track and once the main was hoisted the front of the sail was tensioned by pulling down on the goose neck...

Sea trial for 1990 Ericson 34-2 next week

I expect that regulations for propane do not get more lax as years go by (!) but when I installed a full system in our prior boat I had to have no (zero) pipe/hose manifolds or joints between the inside of the tank compartment and the inside appliance. I put a small manifold inside the propane...

Sea trial for 1990 Ericson 34-2 next week

Ah so. Since conventional symmetrical spinnakers are unfashionable in these modern times, the A-Sail should do be adequate, presuming that is what is mean't by "cruising spinnaker". No spinnaker pole is chocked on deck, presumably? And yup, lots of owners do use the end of the bow roller to tack...
