    Compression Post and bulkhead troubles

This is a photo of the base of my 1970 E-32-200 compression post taken from the head area looking aft. The plywood at the bulkhead is mush. The problem is, that this is below the area of the bulkhead that I was planning on keeping. The compression post is wet, but not mush. I think a little...

    Ericson 27 Compression Post Question

So I recently bought an E27 that needs quite a bit of work. The worst of it is the Compression Post and aft most bulk head. The one between the head and salon that's attached to the Compression Post. The bottom of the Compression Post has become soft from sitting in water. There are a few leaks...

    1978 E32 rudder post

We have a E-32 with a leaking rudder post. Does anyone have any info on repairing it or know were I might find a manuel? It only leaks while underway but it appers to be a good bit. Thanks for any info.

Rudder post leak stopped E32-3, easy!

Ever since we got our E32-3 there has been a salt water leak past the rudder post stuffing box. Lots of salt crystals in the boat. After the last haulout I pumped a ton of grease into the cavity between the rudder post lower bushing and stuffing box. To my pleasant surprise no more leak. The...

    Rudder Post Sleeve

I'm looking into installing a below deck autopilot in my E35-3. I'd like to use an Edson tiller arm on the rudder post as the attachment point for the drive, rather than use th quadrant. However, the rudder post has a sleeve, seems to be a dense plastic, that covers it from the lower glassed in...

    Water in the rudder post

I took the cover off to look at the access to the top of the rudder post and saw that there was water in the post to about 18 inches from the top. The cover was very hard to get off and maybe because it's warped. After cleaning the threads it was still very hard to screw down and I couldn't...

    E-27 Rudder Post Removal Problem

I cannot get my rudder to fall out no matter what I do....the cockpit plate will not come off and the rudder will not drop.....there is no quadrant or fastener that I am missing is there? does the tube running from the hull to the underside of the cockpit attach to the tiller plate??

    78 E-27 rudder post jammed

I am unable to free my rudder after a sand bar collision that pushed the rudder up to starboard...it slid down about two inches when the tiller was removed but will not drop free. I have exhausted many efforts at wedging but still no luck. Anyone?

Should the rudder post be greased ?

I've looked for a grease nipple but don't see one. I'm actually kind of surprised because I would have expected one if only to keep water from coming up along the post during heavy seas. -Sven

    E27 rudder post bushings

Hi to everyone on this fantastic site.I've been lurking here for a while and have finally found the E27 I was looking for.I'll be taking delivery of her on November 18 and sailing back home to the Keys + - 200nm.She is in great shape for a 74 with a good few upgrades but there is about a...

WANTED: 2-3/8" flange base for radar post

Does anyone know a good source for a 2-3/8" flange base for an aluminum radar post mounted on the transom? The Navcom flange base mounts sold by Edson are $80. I also need a rail bracket for the 2-3/8" aluminum post, which costs about $120 at Edson. $200 for both is on the high side. Thanks...

    Rudder Post Shims

I just purchased a 1986 Ericson 28. I think that I am going to need to add shims to the rudder post, but I am not sure of the procedure. How do I know that this is needed? I can feel the rudder clunking from side to side in wind and waves. Also when sailing downwind in breeze there is lots of...

This post has no real purpose

Except that the SE section is not well represented so I thought I'd scrawl on the imaginary wall. I'm looking forward to next weekend when I'll be cruising my E27 "Horizon's End" down Mobile Bay and into the ICW for a three-day Widespread Panic concert at a joint called The Wharf. Weather...

    First Sailboat-First post

My wife and I just bought a beautifully cared for and totally equipped 1975 E-29 from my father in laws estate. It is my first sailboat but have been around powerboats all my life. All I can say is WOW ! What a boat to learn on. My wife and I have been sailing almost every weekend since November...

Looking for old post on mast step water

Hi folks, I keep getting 997 or 998 returns when I search for "mast step" channel water bilge (and anything else I try but "monkey" then I get 11, so search is working). I know there is a post talking about creating a channel for the water that gathers on top of the mast step into the bilge...

    rusting compression post

While looking in the bilge of my 1982 E25+ I noticed a rusting piece of metal with what appears to be (or have been!) a nut at the bottom. Since this is right under the wooden/glass compression post in the cabin, I assume this was some sort of an adjustable compression post extension. My...

Removing Rudder Quadrant from Rudder Post

All bolts holding the two halves of my rudder quadrant together are hopelessly seized, including the single bolt going through the quadrant and rudder post. In fact, the head of that bolt is about to shear off because I was able to get to wrench to turn the head, but am certain the shank was...

    Painting Crisis (Longest Post Ever?)

First, let me apologize in advance for the length of this post. I am new at all of this and I really need some guidance and, perhaps, a little encouragement. I'll try to set out my questions at the end of this lengthy post. I bought a 1985 Ericson 26 last August. My first boat - and she's a...

    Is emergency rudder post effective?

My 1984 E30+ came with an emergency rudder post in the event that the steering wheel or mechanism fails. In reading about offshore sailing, several books talk about how difficult it is to operate jury-rigged rudders/tillers/etc. due to the forces on the rudder. They also say that the normal...

    compression post...

I'm in a brain picking mood today... :egrin: Anyone have any thoughts on moving the compression post in our 38-200? It's currently right in front of the mast... Could you move it (assuming it stayed on center line) or have 2 smaller ones? Just thinking out loud here... Peanut Gallery?

How do I delete my own post?

Due to error messages that I was getting from the system when trying to post I question, I accidently ended up posting three copies of the same thing. I'd like to delete two of them. However, I do not see any option to delete, even when I try to edit. Where's the delete button? The help...

    Dropped Rudder Post

When I pulled my 38-200 for the winter here on Lake Champlain I noticed that the rudder post had dropped about 5/8 of an inch, exposing the s/s post between the top of the rudder and the hull. I'm not sure how that happened but I'd like to get confirmation of how the rudder post is attached to...

    E38 rudder post grease fittings?

Hey, this may be a dumb question but where are the grease fittings on the rudder post of a '83 E38? I have looked and can't seem to find them.... Not the most accessible area as you can imagine. Thanks, RT

    e35-2 Rudder Post Diameter

My '77 e35-2 needs new packing around the rudder post and I don't have easy access to measure the diameter - anyone happen to know if the shaft is 2 3/8, 2 7/8 or 3 1/2? Also - any hints from one who has re-packed the 35-2 rudder will be appreciated - ie: can it be done completely from the...

    Compression post movement

There has been about a 1/2 inch movement to starboard in the compression post on my ericson 35. The bulkhead has seperated from the hull and the whole unit seems to be very slowly moving ( 1/2 inch in 4 years). Can anyone give me some insight into why this is happening and how to fix the...

    Water entering rudder post E-27

I've been trying to determine in the last year where an extensive ammount of water has been coming from in my bilge. Packing - E32-2 rudder post packing

I have been following threads on this subject for a while, as the packing/connection at the top of my E-32-2 (1971) was leaking last season, and I want to stop the leak! The snow has finally cleared, and so I started to tackle the problem. Regarding the steering system and attachments to the...

    E-32 leaking Rudder Post

Ok...I've read some of the other threads on this problem. Just hauled the old girl and among other things tried to address the rudder post leak. I repacked the stuffing box, checked the play, which was minimal, dropped the rudder, and greased everything. The thing still leaks. Is it the bronze cap...

    cracking headliner at compression post

A friend has a '74 E-32 that is showing cracks in the headliner around the post under the mast. The mast load is obviously pushing down the headliner causing the cracks. Question: What is between the headliner and the base of the mast that is collapsing or is the problem between the cabin sole...

Wind Vane, Speed Impeller, Engine work and getting the table post loose

As you can tell from the list of items in the subject line I'm tackling a range of issues. I'm the new and proud owner of Galileo, an Ericson 35-3. She's currently on the hard and I'd like to take care of a few things before I launch her (I know, it's mid October, but I just bought it!)...
