Alternate B - low tech for west coast sailors

Go to sleep at night. Get up as the sky begins to lighten. Wait all day (you can provision during this time as it a bit longer than a day-sail). Cast off and sail towards the setting sun! Hold your course!

P.S. Do not be confused by Japan's slogan, "The Land of the rising Sun." It is that, yes, but only from the perspective of China (your next possible stop).

Google Earth can't switch hemispheres

Try the Google Earth link with USA to New Zealand and it cannot calculate. Try it from Los Angeles, CA to Honolulu, HI, and it sends you north to Seattle before you Kayak across the Pacific! It seems to like all west coast departures from Seattle! Google is in Silicon Valley while Microsoft is Seattle, so that surprises me.
