Here is an option for repairing your masthead unit.

While never mentioned (to me) by the DMI repair company (the last place repairing Datamarine), there is a rebuild kit for the masthead unit. I stumbled on a web site showing all the steps to repair the unit at http://www.pearson35.com/projects/wind_vane_repair.htm

A year and a half ago,I paid DMI around $125 "rebuild" the masthead unit . The repair included a number of items but nothing electrical that I saw on the itemized invoice. This year the direction worked but intermittent wind speed. After testing the ohm readings as described in the Link 5000 manual I determined the cable wires were ok -and that the problem is very likely in the electrical components. Advice by DMI was to send it in for another $75 bench fee plus parts. I cant explain why they did not mention the repair kit as an option.

I then found a place that has been selling the kit at BOEmarine http://www.boemarine.com/products/GCO-WSR-KIT/dmimarine-datamarine-wind-speed-rebuild-kit Doing it myself isn't cheap but perhaps better than the multiple steps I went through.

I talked to BOE Marine today. The sold two recently and I bought the last one they had - $102 if they get more. Robert at BOE was uncertain if they would have any more later - but I would bet that DMI repair has them for do it yourself people - especially now that we have some help using the repair web site images.

I have had very good experience with DMI but I am a bit frustrated by not being told of the rebuild kit.
