EricsonYachts.ML - Discontinuance Discussion

EricsonYachts.ML - the mail list service from EricsonYachts.org, is under consideration for discontinuance. The service was really a cross-over service for the users of the old Ericson list on the SailNet site - before they went bankrupt - and activity on the site has dwindled more and more.

We've in the midst of considering removing it because of the lack of use, and the increase in spam bots which hit our site daily. I just removed the link to the EricsonYachts.ML page today because of this. Unknown to most of you, are an army of automated bots, all trying to register accounts and then spam our boards with ads for Viagra and Lexus (they just seem to go together!) - hit us daily...so it's something we need to look at... :egrin:

I take security seriously, and will review this over the next couple of days.

When that decision comes down, I will send out a final message on the service, and then disable it, and delete the database, etc - so you won't need to do anything...

Thanks,
//sse

I am all for finding a safer way. If I understand correctly, how do we get the email of a a member that everyone won't see? I change my user name in the beginning because as school teachers there needs to part of my life...though a small part it seems, that does not evolve students. This site has become my second family.

What every keeps this site working I all for.

No no - it's not the Information Exchange (this set of forums you're currently in) that's being done away with - just the EricsonYachtsML, email-based list - which no one uses (there have been about one message per five-six month period - so in my mind that counts as not used).

If you're not sure what EricsonYachtsML is/was - don't worry about it - it just proves my point!

:egrin:

The software on the Information Exchange (this set of forums) is much, much better - written by Jelsoft Software in London - and extremely well supported. vBulletin is one of the most popular bulletin board packages out there (so we chose well when we chose them in 2000). This is one reason I want to get away from EY.ML - I just don't think it's well supported - and don't want the headaches if it gets hacked.

Hey Sean, how ya been?

Funny, I'd completely forgotten about the M/L - which speaks volumes about its importance to me.:) So, I'd say if it needs to be sacrificed to save us from the spam demons, its demise will have not been in vain.:egrin:
