This is the shape I think I will modify my rudder to. It has a little more area in front of the shaft center to help in turning the rudder and it has more area down where it will be the most effective.
If anyone wants this file let me know what format you want it in at super07@shaw.ca

Like the design, I might go for a straight trailing edge just to keep things simple when fabricating.

I have the redrawn i.e. enlarged rudder that your father drew.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought the OP was referring to the area of the hull
just in front of the rudder that fairs into the skeg. I see now that he
was referring to the change in sections over the length of the rudder.
I'm not sure why this was done, but I can find out.

This design extends the rudder aft as well as down. Are you suggesting that this is not the best design for todays thinking. If so, what is the appropriate mod, might you have drawings? Do you have a fabricator that has built it?

Thanks

The best thing to do for the 39 is extend the rudder aft and down, just
like the drawing you mentioned indicates. Unlike the original, the sections
should remain the same over the length of the rudder with no hollows. As
I mentioned earlier in this thread, Foss Foam built my rudder. Westerly
Marine in Santa Ana, would be another choice.

Did you drop the rudder while in the water or on the hard ?

Did you put the boat back in the water without the rudder while it was being re-built if you dropped it on the hard ?

I'm asking because we'd planned to get a larger rudder installed while hauled at Marina Shipyard in Los Alamitos but the rudder builder now says he needs the original to build a new one (originally he'd said he just needed measurements). While building with the original as at least an example makes a lot more sense to me it is now a bit late to change plans for a haulout in two weeks. So I'm wondering what my options are

Thanks,

Hi Sven,

I did mine while the boat was on the hard. The new rudder was built
while my hull was drying out in prep for barrier coating (app. 3 months).
This was plenty 'o time to build the new rudder and barrier coat it before
installing it. You have to pull the boat out, and drop the old rudder if
for no other reason than to get accurate i.d. measurements of the bearings.
Once you have the measurement (several taken and then averaged)
then you can provide this number to your fabricator as well as the
old rudder. I am assuming you are reusing the old gudgeon? If you are
your fabricator will need that part as well-it comes out still attached
to to old rudder.

I guess they weren't charging you $199 per day for on the hard storage in a working yard :egrin:

We'll have to figure out how to do this and haul again.
